Psychotic depression treatment

Treatment for psychotic depression is quite effective and the patients are recommended to take the medication for a certain period of time in order to prevent a reoccurrence.

Some of the medications used to treat psychotic depression include:

Antidepressant Medications: It is one of the commonly prescribed medications which are used to control depressive symptoms such as anxiety, feelings of ineptitude or guilt, fatigue, numbness, depressed mood, and lack of interest in almost all activities. These medications have very mild side effects.

Mood Stabilizers: Doctors usually prescribe mood-stabilizing drugs for patients who experience drastic mood swings or very bad depressive mood. Many experts have recommended that people suffering from psychotic depression react better if the treatment consists of both a mood-stabilizing drug and an antidepressant medication and lithium is the best example for this.

Antipsychotic Medications: Antipsychotic medications are mostly employed to control psychotic symptoms, such as delusions, psychotic belief and obsession thoughts. These medications may leads to some serious side effects, and are called as extra-pyramidal effects, such as twitching, muscular rigidity, shaking, and involuntary movements.

Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT): ECT is very effective in treating severe psychotic depressive symptoms. ECT is nothing but a controlled electrical shock introduced into the brain of the patient after giving anesthesia. This therapy is recommended for patients who had no favorable improvements in other types of medications.
