Postpartum depression encompasses a range of emotional and physical changes many mothers face right after the child birth. The range of symptoms associated with the condition usually occurs within a span of 24 hours to a few days to months following the delivery. The typical symptoms observed in this form of depression are persistent sad mood, lack of pleasure or interest in activities, especially those which were once associated with pleasure. Many mothers also experience the development of an erratic sleep pattern which leads to sleeplessness at night, a condition better known as insomnia. On the other hand, new mothers immediately after the birth of their child reel under persistent feelings of sadness, grief, helplessness and hopelessness from life. They are also perturbed with the feeling of guilt or worthlessness and face injury to their self esteem.
It is important to take a proper care of new mothers suffering from clinical depression as they have a tendency to commit suicide and declare an end to this life. According to specialists, such mothers seek ways of self-destruction as a way to get rid of baseless grief and sadness. They may take a step towards self-mutilation so as to get rid of the consistent feelings of dejection and rejection.
