Manic Depression: What are the Symptoms of the Condition?

Manic depression, a severe form of depression causes abrupt shifts in the person’s moods, energy levels and thought process. People suffering from this kind of depression usually experience intense transformations in extreme emotional status. This emotional status may vary from the occurrence of an over-joyful or elated state, better known as the manic state to a complete hopeless state of mind called depressive episode. In popular terms, these states of mind are known as the mixed states which cause both elation and depression at certain intervals. Those reeling under this condition undergo extreme changes in other traits as well apart from mood. These changes may be observed in energy level, sleep patterns, behavior and activities. Furthermore, it is typical of a manic depression patient to experience elongated periods of unstable moods that may last for days to week. He / she may experience long period of high or elation followed by a prolonged period of low or depression.

Changes in behavior like abrupt shift from one idea to another and having racy thoughts are other evident signs of the same. Such people tend to be extremely restless throughout the day and night because of which experience irregularities in sleep pattern as well.
