A great number of people- about five to ten percent of the population have a major depression at any stage of their life and it is estimated that 15 percent of people develops major depression sometime in their life.

If you feel so low and cannot concentrate on anything such as works or family obligations or if you feel suicidal then you should know that the line has been crossed. You become depressed if your low mood lasts for over two weeks or your sleep, appetite, and thought are affected for long time.
There is a difference between sadness and depression because you never feel disinterested in sadness but never does in depression. There are different types of depression. You may become depressed for a stressful event in your life such as losing jobs, break up in relationship etc and this is type of depression is termed as a adjustment disorder with depressed mood. Another type of depression is called major depression or unipolar depression. Unipolar depression is more biological in origin. There are also other types of depressions as well such as maniac depression or posthantal depression.  Adjustment disorder with depressed mood is the most common types of depression.
