Effects of Depression on Diabetes

Patrick Lustman, PHD at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis reveals that the combination of depression and diabetes can be deadly. And because of psychological interactions between these two ailments, it becomes very difficult to control them. And this combination also increases the risk of cardiovascular health problems and other health complications.

Dr Lustman believes that people having depression tend to eat more and exercise less. This puts them on the obesity side which would increase the risk of diabetes and other problems due to uncontrolled blood sugar levels. And thus, in one of the studies it was found that depressed adults having diabetes are found to have more BMI than non-depressed people with diabetes.

And thus, from this one may conclude that if depression triggers diabetes or makes it worse than treating depression will help in effective management of blood sugar levels too. However, the studies on this topic are still in the developing stage and thus there are no strong evidences to support this.
