Depression and weight gain
|
Depression and weight gain are two medical conditions known to co-exist. Many doctors claim it a vicious circle wherein the people end up adopting wrong eating habits to kill boredom, depression, isolation and other emotional turbulences. One of the major contributors of depression and consequent weight gain is stress. The buildup of the stress level transforms the person into a flight mode which leads to excessive release of the chemical called cortisol. The increase in the level of this chemical in the blood stream leads to an increased appetite and thus gradual weight gain. Secondly, insomnia or erratic sleeping patterns is another side effect of depression. Sleeplessness or lack of sleep for adequate hours at night leads to abrupt gain in weight. This increased weight can only be naturally reduced once the person re-instates a regular sleep pattern. |
