Clinical Depression: How to Diagnose?

There are numerous health care providers who may help the patients of clinical depression fight their condition. One may seek the guidance of mental health therapists, primary care providers, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers and emergency physicians. Each of these specialists adopts a similar set of diagnostic measure to detect the progression of this condition. The first and most important step to begin the diagnosis of this depressive state of mind is a thorough medical interview and a physical examination. In a medical interview the person may be asked to divulge the latest changes in the behavior pattern noticed. The same set of questions may however also be asked from the relatives living with the person. This step is particularly followed to learn if the patient is actually witnessing the bouts of symptoms typically observed in this depressive condition.

Furthermore, in the meantime, several other laboratory tests are also conducted so as to rule out the possibility of other disorders. This narrows down the possibilities of disorders and helps the doctors to reach to one conclusion easily. Most commonly a blood test is conducted for the same, but at times other laboratory tests like X-ray, imaging test or scan be done to negate the presence of any other disorder.
