Endogenous depression is a form of depression that seems to come from within. The reasons for this kind of depression are not known yet. Depression is said to be endogenous if there is no trigger or causative factor associated with it. The patient simply feels depressed for no reason whatsoever. There does seem to a genetic and biological link to endogenous depression. Some studies show that people with endogenous depression have lower serotonin levels in their brain. This chemical imbalance in the brain could be the reason for their depression. People with endogenous depression often have a family history of depression. This has led scientists to assume that the condition is inherited or passed on from parent to child. In some people endogenous depression may lie dormant till they are confronted with a stressor. A person can experience a bout of endogenous depression at any point of their lives and the intensity of the depression can range from mild to severe. The problem with this kind of depression is that it is often misunderstood since there is no trigger or any other factor in the patient’s life that can lead them to depression. However, endogenous depression must be recognized and treated as the patient experiences symptoms like moodiness, sadness, sleep disturbances, loss of appetite and even suicidal tendencies. |
