Antidepressants: Some important facts

An antidepressant can be defined as a type of psychiatric medication that is used for the alleviation of mood disorders like major depression, dysthymia. The term is very closely associated with certain drugs. These drugs are MAOIs (Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors), TCAs (Tricyclic antidepressants), TeCAs (tetracyclic Antidepressants), SSRIs (Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) and SNRIs (Serotonin Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors).  Most of the psychiatrist or physicians prescribe these drugs to those who suffer from depression. However, no confirmation could yet be established on the effectiveness and side effects of the drugs. It is still open to research and studies. Though the drugs are approved for usage, still there are certain restrictions on their use. Hence the drugs should not be used without the prescription of a certified physician. It is also important to maintain the dosage according to the prescription in order to avoid any complications or risks. Once taken, the antidepressant starts showing its effect normally within two to six weeks. In some cases it may take time in months to start producing the effects. Antidepressants are used for the treatment of disorders like anxiety disorders, eating disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, chronic pain and some other disorders caused by hormonal imbalance.
